Farmington's Patriotic Day ceremony will honor Vietnam-era vets

Elizabeth “Betty” Wall was the guest speaker for the 2011 Patriotic Day event. This year the event wll honor Vietnam Veterans.

Farmington-area Vietnam-era veterans will be the honored guests at the 2013 Patriotic Day ceremony at Farmington High School.

"We want to pay them the respect, gratitude and courtesy that they truly deserve," North Trail Elementary School principal Dr. Steven Geis said.

Geis is one of the many people planning this year's Patriotic Day celebration, which will be held at Farmington High School on Thursday, Nov. 7. Patriotic Day is a joint project between the Farmington School District and various community organizations.

The event will begin with a free community meal at 5 p.m., followed by a program in the school's recital hall at 7 p.m.

"The program will have musical selections from all of the schools," Geis said. "In addition, we will be recognizing all of the Vietnam veterans who are in the audience."

That's why the Patriotic Day planners are hoping Vietnam veterans call and register in advance — so their names can be added to a list, and they can participate in a roll call during the ceremony.

"We want to do the roll call of all Vietnam vets so we can honor them and thank them for their service," Geis said.

The event is open to the public. Organizers ask that anyone interested in attending make reservations by calling North Trail Elementary School, 651-460-1805.

Free transportation will be provided to senior citizens. Seniors may board buses at Vermillion River Crossings apartments, the Spruce Place apartments, or at Trinity Care Center.

The 2012 Patriotic Day ceremony drew more than 1,400 veterans, students and members of the public.
