After the first week of filing the Farmington School District already has more candidates signing up than it did the last time it held elections.

As of Tuesday afternoon, four candidates had thrown their hats into the ring for the Nov. 4 election. The seats of board chair Julie McKnight and board members Ann Manthey and Tim Weyandt are up for grabs.

Manthey has said she does not plan to run again. McKnight has not responded to questions from the Independent about her plans.

Weyandt, who started his own business last October, said last week he is leaning against running but keeping his options open.

"We've made some great strides and what I don't want to do is see someone get in there who's in there for the wrong reason or for one issue," Weyandt said. "That wouldn't be good for the kids."

Julie Singewald, Jim Proutkey, Carol Kappes and Veronica Walter were the first candidates to file for this year's election.

Singewald works as a laboratory scientist at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and was the volunteer coordinator for Farmington Elementary School in the 2007-08 school year. She has volunteered to coach soccer and hockey teams in the city.

Singewald and her husband, Bill, have three daughters, ages 5, 9 and 11.

Peroutky got involved in school district politics last year as one of the people behind Opportunity Partners, a group that campaigned in support of a sports complex proposed as an addition to the new Farmington High School building.

Peroutky has been active in the Farmington Youth Hockey Association.

Kappes, a registered dental assistant, currently serves on three school district committees. She's on the community education advisory committee, the instructional program review committee and the communication advisory council.

We did not hear back from Walter in time for this week's edition.
