August Elof Swenson, 89
August Elof Swenson, 89, of Fertile, died on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
August was born on Jan. 30, 1920 to Elof and Hannah Swenson in their home. He was baptized at his home and later confirmed in Faaberg Lutheran Church at Rindal. He grew up and attended Giant Oak Country School in the Bear Park Township. He entered the United States Army and served his country from 1942-1945 during World War II.
On Sept. 1, 1946, August was united in marriage to Clarine Lucille Ellingson in the Faaberg Lutheran Church of Rindal. August worked as a dairy farmer until retiring in 1983 but continued to assist his sons, Keith and David, on the farm. During the next nine years, they moved to Farmington during the winter months where August drove school bus for Marshall Lines. In 1992 they returned to Fertile, and August drove school bus for the Fertile-Beltrami School District. Clarine died Dec. 27, 1992. August continued to assist his sons, Keith and David, with farming until recently.
August was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a member of the American Legion, VFW, Disabled Veterans and the Eagles Club. August was proud of his military service and felt it an honor to serve his country. He was gentle spirited, kind to all and dedicated to his family. He had a great sense of humor and always a twinkle in his eye when telling a story.
August is survived by four sons: David and his wife Mary, Keith and his wife Kathryn, both of Fertile, Michael and his wife Linda of Crookston and Tony and his wife Diane of Blaine; one daughter-in-law, Sue of Farmington; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Clinton (Marion), Fertile; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clarine; a son, Steven, Feb. 26, 2009; and two brothers, Harry and Carl.
Funeral services were on Monday, March 16, 2009, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile. Visitation was from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 at Concordia Lutheran Church and one hour before the services. Burial was in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fertile.
