With days getting a little cooler, it's a good bet that sooner or later, Farmington homeowners will start thinking about fall yardwork and cleanup.

This year, the city of Farmington is launching a new program called Bag it ... Tag it. The intent is to help residents get rid of their yard waste.

The program is pretty simple, Farmington municipal services coordinator Lena Larson said. Residents can go to Farmington City Hall, purchase specific tags for the program, place the tags on bags of yard waste, place the bags by the curb, and the yard waste will be picked up by Dick's Sanitation.

"It's a new option for people who don't necessarily want the seasonal service," Larson said. "Some people only need it in the late spring or early in the fall. They don't need (yard waste collection) all year long."

Farmington has a seasonal yard waste removal program in place. For $82 annually, residents can have their yard waste taken away throughout the year. While many residents participate in the annual program, Larson said a number of residents said they only needed the service a couple of times a year. That's why the city worked up the Bag it ... Tag it program with Dick's Sanitation.

The tags are $3 each, and can only be purchased at city hall. The tags are good through 2019, which is the end date for the city's contract with Dick's.

"If they buy five or 10 this year and they don't use them all until next year, that's no problem," Larson said.

Residents can get rid of any kind of yard waste, be it grass clippings, garden waste, leaves or twigs. Small bundles of branches will also be collected, as long as the branches are not more than four inches in diameter, and are no more than four feet long. When the bags are ready, residents must call Dick's Sanitation to schedule a collection.

The program does not include removal of rocks, boulders, dirt, sod, stumps, logs or lumber.

Residents can still take their yard waste to area composting sites, Larson added. The closest two are The Mulch Store on Blaine Avenue in Empire, or B & D Wood Recycling and Composting near Northfield. For more information on the Bag it ...
