Inexperience didn't affect the Farmington golf team's performance in its first meet of the season.

Despite losing four seniors from last year's varsity lineup, and playing without projected No. 2 golfer Erik Holmstrom, the Tigers opened with a 15 1/2-8 1/2 match play victory over Rosemount last Wednesday at Fountain Valley Golf Course.

Points were awarded in each foursome for winning the front nine, winning the back nine, winning the overall 18-hole competition and winning the 18th hole.

"We are keeping a running total that will carry over when we play Rosemount again at their home course, Emerald Greens, next month," Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. "With such a strong showing in the first match, we only need nine points at the next match to win the overall competition."

The Tigers also performed well individually, according to Holmes. Senior Ryan Kelly led the team with a round of 77 and teammate Tommy May was one stroke back at 78. Senior Mitch Reed carded an 81 and Tony Lalani, Jake Hanson and Grant Hauswirth turned in matching rounds of 84.

Josh Cordes (86), Nathan Anderson (87), Jake Jensen (87), Garrett Heidelberger (92), Sam Newcomb (100) and KC Balke (100) also competed for the Tigers.

"The varsity team kept their scores and we tallied a 320," Holmes said. "This was a good showing for us, and considering we lost four seniors and lost to Rosemount in this same format last year by a landslide, we can take a lot of momentum out of our first match and hopefully build some confidence going into the coming weeks."
