Seth Roberts' No. 1 singles win highlighted the Farmington tennis team's season-opening loss to Lakeville South Thursday night at Farmington High School.
Roberts fell behind 4-1 in the first set before rallying for a 6-4, 6-3 decision that was the Tigers' lone triumph in a 6-1 loss to the Cougars.
"We played pretty well for the first match, but the road is likely going to be rockier in the future," veteran coach Jack Olwell said. "We've got some work to do, but we are enjoying the process. We have eight previous letter-winners in the lineup with two ninth graders in the singles line up."
At No. 2 singles, freshman Ben Kline played consistently in a 5-7, 3-6 loss. Blake Olmscheid, another freshman, lost 3-6, 4-6 at No. 4 singles and senior Andrew Froehling fell by the same score at No. 3 singles.
"Our singles did very well for three new players in the lineup," Olwell said."
In doubles play, the tandem of seniors Neuth Orm and Marc Ellis put up a fight in a 1-6, 5-7 setback. The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Nico Uchytil and Adam Wrucke lost 1-6, 2-6 and Logan and Dylan West lost by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
The Tigers compete again Monday when Hastings comes to town for a non-conference match. Play is set to begin at 4:15 p.m. at the high school.
