California wildfires delay reopening of Apostle's Manitou Island
Wildfires in California are delaying the reopening of Manitou Island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. It was closed in early July because of an overly familiar bear.
Park officials hoped to put staff time into "aversion training" with the bear to encourage it to stay away from visitor areas. But diminished staff levels because of California's fires postponed the project.
"Several members of our staff who are trained in firefighting were sent out there," said Neil Howk, a Lakeshore spokesman.
The island was closed on July 2 after a black bear living on the island chased a volunteer into an outhouse and sat in front of the door, briefly trapping the scared volunteer inside. Authorities believe that this wasn't the only incident of aggression toward humans involving this bear.
The island will remain closed to the public until further notice.
