It turns out, you can get an awful lot done in two hours. Especially if you have 500 people helping you out.

That’s what Farmington natural resource specialist Jen Dullum found out during last year’s annual Pond and Park Cleanup Day, when more than 500 residents collected nearly a ton of garbage in just two hours.

As she gears up for the 2014 Park and Pond Cleanup, Dullum hopes to get as many — if not more — volunteers signed up for this April’s community event. Dullum started taking reservations for volunteers earlier this month, and she’ll take names through Friday, April 18.

The 2014 Park and Pond Cleanup Day will be Saturday, April 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. It’s a time when residents come together to do a little spring cleaning, only the cleaning happens outside, on public spaces all around the community. Last year, volunteers collected trash from 38 locations around the city.

“A lot of people like to choose their own sites in their neighborhood,” Dullum said. “Otherwise, if they don’t request a specific site, the site is chosen for them. I try to reach all corners of the city.”

The city of Farmington will supply the garbage collection bags and take care of disposing of the garbage after it is picked up. Volunteers are then invited to have lunch afterward.

Residents or organizations who are interested in participating in this year’s cleanup should call Dullum at 651-280-6845 or email her at jdullum@ci.farmington.mn.us.

Farmington’s annual Earth and Arbor Day celebration will follow Park and Pond Cleanup. The Earth and Arbor Day festivities will be held at Rambling River Center, starting at 11:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend that event, as well.
