More than 200 volunteers battled the elements just so they could clean up their community Saturday morning.

The annual Park and Pond Cleanup Day was marred by cold temperatures and rain Saturday, but Farmington natural resource specialist Jen Dullum said the weather didn't dampen the spirits of volunteers.

"There were some people who came in their jackets and their boots. They were prepared for the elements," Dullum said. "We had about 550 volunteers RSVP, and about 200 of them showed up. I'm still happy we had 200. If it had been a nice day, I bet all of those people would have showed up."

Volunteers collected nearly two tons of trash on Saturday alone, she said.

Many of those who didn't come Saturday are still following through with their commitment. Some picked up their packets and bags Saturday morning then went out Sunday; others rescheduled for weeknights this week. When necessary, those groups will call Dullum so she can line up sanitation to pick up the trash collected. Only five groups have not picked up their supplies, she said.

Regardless of when the groups went out, Dullum applauds the Farmington volunteers.

"For that many people to come out, that's amazing," she said. "It shows the dedication and commitment to their community."

The community's Earth and Arbor Day celebration also went off without a hitch - but for the fact that it was relocated. The rain prohibited the events to be held at Rambling River Park, Dullum said, so everything was moved to Rambling River Center.

"We got more people to come out for Earth and Arbor Day, which is good," Dullum said. "We want to get the word out."

The Farmington business community had also intended to do cleanup at three different locations Saturday. They decided to reschedule their efforts for May 14.
