Farmington Library manager Mary Scheide said the contest is a good way for aspiring writers to get their work out into the public.

"It's a shot to get creative work out there," said Scheide.

Poets of all ages can submit original poems. Awards and prizes will be given to the top three entries in five age groups: children age 6-9; children age 10-11; teens age 12-14; teens age 15-18; and adults age 19 and older. Winners will be announced at Poetry Month events in April.

Rosemount librarian Kathy Kleckner said the poems can consist of any format or style. Writers should limit their work to no more than two pages. Submissions should not contain derogatory or offensive language.

A group of librarian judges will review the poems and decide on the winners.

Winning works will be published on the Dakota County Library web site, and printed in separate booklets for children, teen, and adults, said Scheide. Winners will receive a free copy of the printed poetry booklet.

While not every entry is a winner, Scheide said it's interesting to see what people submit.

"It's neat to read work from people in the community," said Scheide. "Some of the entries are really personal.
