Dakota City offers summer day camps for area kids
Dakota City Heritage Village in Farmington will again be offering several four-day sessions of day camp in summer 2013. Day camp will run Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each camper will need to bring a bag lunch and a water bottle each day. All project supplies for the camp and an afternoon snack will be provided by Dakota City.
The Teen Volunteer Camp will be offered for one session June 17-20. This camp is for 13-year-olds and older youth who would like to volunteer in Dakota City. It will focus on training and hands-on activities in the buildings so these youth will be able to volunteer during the Apprentice Day camps, the Dakota County Fair, the Harvest Moon Festival and Christmas in the Village. The training offered will be different from last year and space will be limited. New this year will be the option to stay on Wednesday evening until 8 p.m. for extra activities including cooking supper over a campfire. There will be an additional charge of $25 for this option.
Youth ages six through 12 are invited to attend the Apprentice Day Camp offered June 24-27, July 15-18 or July 22-25. They will experience life in the early 1900s by helping with chores, participating in a country school day and participating in hands-on activities from that time period. They also will learn what it was like to be an immigrant in 1900 and arrive at Ellis Island, travel across the country and settle in Minnesota. Also included will be health topics, games and pastime entertainment from the turn of the century. Each apprentice camp session will be limited to 24 participants.
The cost for all camps will be $125 per youth. Registrations are being accepted now. Families must furnish their own transportation to Dakota City, which is located at 4008-220th St. W. on the fairgrounds in Farmington.
Grandparents and others are encouraged to give a session of day camp by purchasing a gift certificate in the Dakota City office. For a registration form, gift certificate or more information, visit the village's web site at www.dakotacity.org or call 651-460-8050.
