Matthew Steven Brandenburg, 28, of Rosemount, has been charged with two felony theft offenses for allegedly taking a collection of computer towers, monitors and other items that had been discarded by the Dakota Communication Center and set aside for auction. Brandenburg, who had started his own business several months before the thefts, was caught on video several times around the time the thefts occurred taking items out of the DCC storage locker.

According to a complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney's office, Brandenburg admitted to sheriff's deputies that he had taken approximately 10 computer towers, eight touchscreen monitors and several computer cables from the DCC. He claimed the items were garbage that needed to be recycled and said he was saving his company money by taking them.

Brandenburg also reportedly admitted there were good components in some of the items he took.

Deputies found 10 monitors in Brandenburg's business, all with DCC tags on them. Brandenburg also turned over computer hard drive he said came from one of the computers. He said the rest of the computers were either scrapped or sold.

All told, the computer equipment is valued at about $1,400.

If convicted on a either of the two felony theft charges he faces, Brandenburg could face up to five years in jail and fines of up to $10,000.
