Editorial: Happy to be in Farmington

Email News Alerts

As we put the finishing touches on this week's Independent many of our readers are probably gathering with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season in their own particular way. They are eating big meals and sharing gifts. They are enjoying togetherness and, we hope, generally taking stock of the ways in which they are fortunate.

We at the Independent feel fortunate to be doing what we're doing. We see a need for a news source that focuses exclusively on Farmington, its issues and its people, and we are happy to be that for you, our readers.

There is plenty going on in Farmington. From city council budget decisions to the Farmington School District's rapidly progressing iPad initiative there are stories to tell. Stories that would fall through the cracks if nobody was there to catch them.

They're not all big news. Some are simple stories about people in the community who are doing interesting things or who have lived interesting lives. We do our best to make each issue a mix of things our readers need to know and things they want to know, whether or not they know when they open the paper that they want to know them. Sometimes the stories find us. Sometimes we have to look a little harder to find them. Always we welcome input from readers on what they see in their city and what they would like to see in their newspaper.

Coming up next week we will take some time to reflect on the year that has gone by in Farmington. As is our tradition we will share with you some of our favorite stories from the past 12 months. For now, however, we're simply happy to be here. We're happy you let us into your homes on a weekly basis and let us talk to you about your community.

As far as we're concerned, that's the greatest gift of all.
