Farmington’s annual Patriotic Day celebration is a pretty remarkable event. At its core, it’s an opportunity for a community to pay tribute to its veterans, but it’s a lot more than that.

The event does a lot to bring Farmington residents together. It includes a free community meal that serves more than 1,000 people, providing residents a chance to sit down and eat next to someone they might otherwise never encounter.

It features tables set up by local organizations interested in letting residents know they are there, giving the people who show up a better idea of the diverse opportunities that exist to get involved in their community.

And, yes, it puts several hundred people in a room to recognize the service and the sacrifices made by the community’s veterans.

In the case of this year’s event, the focus will be on Vietnam veterans, a group that certainly never got this kind of positive attention when they returned from their war.

It is a diverse group that puts on this event. Representatives from local veterans’ organizations and the Yellow Ribbon Network work with school district employees and interested members of the community to pull everything together. It is a team effort and a lot of hard work, but it pays off with something special.

We’re happy to have it in Farmington, and we look forward to it continuing for years to come.
