Empire Township man dies in motorcycle accident
A 44-year-old man died Monday night from injuries sustained after losing control of his motorcycle on County Road 66, just west of Ahern Avenue in Empire Township.
According to Dakota County Sheriff chief deputy Dave Bellows, Thomas Leonard Stanton of Empire was eastbound on County Road 66, sometime between 10 p.m. and 10:20 p.m.
Bellows said Stanton lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown from it, leaving him lying in the eastbound lane of County Road 66.
It is not clear is whether he died from injuries sustained in the fall, or from being struck by two more vehicles.
Stanton was first struck by an eastbound 1993 Cadillac driven by Josefa Alicia Villanueva, 27, of St. Paul. She turned around to return to the accident scene and park on the shoulder of the westbound lane. A 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, driven westbound on County Road 66 by 24-year-old Nicholas Daniel Meszaros of Castle Rock Township, swerved to miss Villanueva's vehicle and hit Stanton.
Farmington Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, along with ALF Ambulance and the Dakota County Sheriff's Department. County Road 66 remained closed for nearly three hours as investigators and the county coroner gathered details at the scene.
The Minnesota State Patrol is reconstructing the accident. Stanton's death is also being investigated by the Dakota County Coroner's Office.
