With less than a month to go before students start showing up in classrooms, it appears Farmington Schools will fuller than expected.

Enrollment numbers presented at a Monday school board workshop show enrollment higher than projected at the elementary and high school levels and lower than expected at the district’s two middle schools.

According to Monday’s numbers, there will be 3,417 students enrolled in district elementary schools when classes start Sept. 2. That is 30 more than the 3,387 projected.

Part of that increase might be due to Gateway Academy, the district’s new school of choice. Superintendent Jay Haugen said many of the students enrolled there are Farmington residents who last year were enrolled in schools outside of the district.

Middle school enrollment is currently lower than projected, with 1,646 students enrolled. The district projected 1,669 students.

High school enrollment is currently 1,873, 36 more than projected.

Enrollment numbers change frequently as the school year approaches. Haugen said Monday that new enrollments have started picking up in recent weeks as parents prepare for the start of the school year.

The district updates its numbers frequently in the weeks leading up to the first day of classes so they can have the right number of teachers in place.

There won’t be a true picture of enrollment until after classes start. Students who leave the district to go elsewhere often don’t let their old school know they’re going.

The district will report its official enrollment numbers to the state in October. Those numbers are used to determine state funding for the district.
