Esther Alvina Massee, 87, of Atchison, Kan., formerly of Farmington, Minn., died Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Gran Villas of Atchison.

Memorial funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009 at the First Christian Church, with Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. The body has been cremated and interment of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Louisville, Wis. The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church or the Atchison Hospital Foundation and may be left in care of the funeral home. Esther A. Steib was born on June 22, 1921 in Streeter, N.D., the daughter of Gottheilf and Lydia (Metzger) Steib. Esther graduated from high school in North Dakota. She was married to Llewellyn W. Massee on Dec. 15, 1944 in Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Massee preceded her in death on July 4, 1980. Mrs. Massee and her husband owned and operated Massees Roller Rink a roller skating rink in Farmington, Minn. for many years. Mrs. Massee moved to Atchison three and half years ago. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, and attended the Atchison Shepherds Center. She loved gardening, bird watching and helping others. She especially loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Jim) Anderson, Westlake Village, Calif., and Cynthia (John) Jacobson, Atchison; four grandchildren, Cheryl (Matt) Manzer, Campbell, Calif., Matthew Jacobson, New York, N.Y., Andrea (Drew) Korschot, Mission, Kan., and Kaitlynn Jacobson, Atchison.

Her parents; husband, Llewellyn Massee; a brother, Alvin Steib; and sister, Edna Peterson preceded her in death.
