When two car fires happened within minutes, and blocks, of each other last weekend, Farmington firefighters knew something wasn’t quite right.

Farmington fire chief Tim Pietsch won’t release the cause of the two fires, but called them both “suspicious at this point.”

Firefighters were initially called to the 300 block of Sixth Street around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. While they were taking care of that fire, another call for a car fire came in two blocks away on the 300 block of Eighth Street. Since they were just about finished with the first call, a couple of firefighters left the first scene and went to the second.

“Right away, they noticed similarities between that one and the one they just came from,” Pietsch said. “They were two blocks apart, at roughly the same time. You knew something wasn’t right.”

Firefighters were approached by a witness who shared information with them. Farmington police officers on the scene took the witness’ statement. The fires are now under investigation, Pietsch said.

Anyone with information about the fires can call the Farmington police department at 651-280-6700, or submit an anonymous tip on the city’s website,, under the Tip411 link on the police department’s page.
