Farmington girls lacrosse: Tigers climb to fifth in rankings
As the Farmington girls lacrosse team’s win total rises, so does its location in the state rankings.
Since that loss, the Tigers haven’t won a game by fewer than five goals. The last four victories have all come by at least 12 goals, including last Thursday’s 13-1 rout of Holy Angels at Tiger Stadium.“This team is like a machine, they just keep getting better and better,” Farmington coach Dan Pickens said. “Our neutral zone was great (against Holy Angels), creating turnover after turnover. This has been an area of focus, so it is nice to see we are making some headway.”When Holy Angels did get possession, it still couldn’t get the ball past Farmington goalkeeper Maddie Kohlbeck. The senior improved upon her state-leading save percentage of .685, stopping eight of nine shots.Shelby Klotz and Kaeli Halverson led eight Farmington goal-scorers, each supplying a hat trick. Rachael Welzin scored twice and handed out three assists and Becky Genzler and Ashley Steffes each had a goal and a pair of assists.Lindsay Benson, Kaitlyn Lacroix and Delaney Johnson each supplied single goals.A day earlier the Tigers held Rochester Century to a season-low goal total in a 16-4 win at Tiger Stadium.Klotz lit up the net for five goals and Becky Genzler put up a six-point night, supplying three goals and three assists. Welzin had two goals and two assists and Halverson and Steffes each scored twice and assisted once.Lacroix and Amanda Davenport added one goal apiece. Davenport also helped the team gain possession, winning 12 draws.Kohlbeck benefitted from a strong game from her defense and stopped 12 of 16 shots.“They did the little things right: won draws, played smart, protected the ball and stuck to the game plan,” Pickens said. “This is why we were able to put up a big number on a good team.… It was a complete team effort and we need to continue to play this well for the remainder of the regular season and into the playoffs.”The Tigers travel to Woodbury tonight before closing out the regular season tomorrow night at Rochester Century.
