Farmington pool is open for summertime fun
It was a little warm and stuffy on June 6, but that was just fine for the staff at the Farmington outdoor pool. Warm and stuffy is good when pool season starts.
Just after noon on Friday, the first swimmers jumped into the outdoor pool, officially kicking off the pool’s 44th season in Farmington.
This year’s season includes a few special events, parks and recreation director Randy Distad said. The School’s Out for Summer event will be held June 19. The Swim and Jam event is set for July 17, and the Back to School Bash is scheduled for Aug. 14. All events are geared for the tween kids in grades 5-8, and go from 8 to 10 p.m. Admission is $7.
“We are really trying to provide something for those kids in the tween age group,” Distad said. “We want to give them a nice, positive activity they can participate in with their friends.”Open to families and students of all ages, the annual Party on the Knoll will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. July 23. The event is a program to celebrate summer and National Recreation and Parks Month. Party on the Knoll includes music, games, art projects and more. This may be one of the last years for the Farmington outdoor pool. Opened in 1971, the pool is showing signs of age. There was a leak in the gutter that had to be fixed, Distad said. A sand filter had to be replaced. The ladder on the slide was rusting, so it was also replaced. The repairs are just part of running a pool that is 44 years old, Distad said.“These are all signs of an old pool,” he said.Pool hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Weekend hours are noon to 8 p.m. The pool is also open for an extra week this year, which means it will not close until Aug. 24, Distad said.Single admission prices are $5 for afternoons, $2.50 for evenings. Residents can also purchase punch cards for 10, 20 or 50 admissions. Those are available on the city’s website, www.ci.farmington.mn.us. Information on special events, and swim bus options are also available on the city’s website.
