Farmington VFW Post 7662 wins consolation title
A 4-3 eight-inning loss to Eastview was the only blemish on a 5-1 week for the Farmington VFW baseball team.
Post 7662 bounced back from the opening-round loss to Eastview at the Eagan tournament, defeating Holy Angels, Minneapolis Southwest and host Eagan to win the consolation championship. Eastview went on to place third in the 10-team tournament, which was won by Minnetonka.
"It was a good tournament. I wish the first game could have gone the other way and kept us in the upper bracket," Farmington coach Mike Winters said.
Jordan Beschorner gave Post 7662 a quality start in the tournament opener, but Eastview plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3 and scored the game winner against reliever Austin Martinsen in the eighth.
Another strong pitching performance carried Farmington past Holy Angels in Game 2 on Saturday. JD Hinks went all seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits and just one on walk as Post 7662 advanced, 3-1.
Five shutout innings from starter Kyle Johnson paved the way for another victory on Saturday, this time a 6-1 decision over Minneapolis Southwest. The Farmington offense scored three in the first inning, one in the third and two more insurance runs in the sixth for reliever Jordan Decrook, who allowed one unearned run over the final two innings.
Post 7662 fell behind 6-0 in the top of the first, but rallied to take down Eagan 13-9 in the consolation championship Sunday.
Martinsen got the win out of the bullpen as the offense rallied for four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead.
Zach Speikers led Post 7662 at the plate over the weekend with seven hits in 15 at bats. Martinsen added five hits, Tyler VanWinke and Ryan Geibel each had four and Nick Schoening and Adam Closmore tacked on three apiece.
Farmington takes a record of 15-6-1 into the final week of the regular season. The six-team sub-district tournament begins next Thursday in Hastings.
