Farmington’s Pacheco to run at USA CC Championship

Farmington senior Maricia Pacheco will be one of 14 American Indian student-athletes representing Wings of America at the USA Track and Field Cross Country Championships Saturday in Boulder, Co.

Wings of America is an organization based in Santa Fe, N.M., whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for American Indian youth. It has fielded a team comprised of some of the top American Indian high school runners from across the country at every USA Cross Country Championship meet since 1988.

The meet features seven men’s and women’s races beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Flatirons Golf Course.

“It's very special to know that I am running in honor of the Native American culture and I have the support of all of the tribes in the U.S.,” Pacheco said.

Pacheco is a five-year distance runner for the Tiger track team and a six-year varsity runner for the cross country team. She qualified for the state cross country meet as a junior.

Pacheco will enroll at the University of Minnesota this fall.
