A few changes are coming to the 2013 Farmington High School Homecoming festivities, but all of the Tiger pride will remain the same.

The biggest change will be a new location for the annual coronation and bonfire events on Wednesday, following the Homecoming parade, FHS assistant principal Lowell Miller said. The parade route is also slightly different.

In addition, the annual Tiger Fun Run has been dropped from this year's homecoming activities, Miller said. The event has been held on the Saturday before Homecoming in the past, but attendance was sparse, he said.

"Until we get into Monday, it doesn't feel like Homecoming so much, and the organizers from the past elected not to do the planning this year, so we let the fun run go," Miller said.

Otherwise, all of the usual events are in place.

The fun kicks off with organizations from around the school district and the city of Farmington building floats at the Dakota County Fairgrounds from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Monday is the FHS Amazing Race. Tuesday brings Taco Tuesday and Movie Night for FHS students.

Wednesday's activities begin with the Homecoming parade through downtown Farmington. The parade starts at 6 p.m., and this year, will follow the same route as the Dew Days parade. It will begin on Third Street, go north to Spruce Street, one block east to Fourth Street and back to the Dakota County Fairgrounds.

In the past, the parade ended at the old high school, which is now Boeckman Middle School. Coronation has been held at BMS in the years since the high school moved to its Flagstaff location, and the bonfire was held across the street at Farmington Fire Station 1. All of that changes this year.

Coronation will begin approximately 45 minutes after the parade is finished — around 8 p.m. — in the recital hall at Farmington High School. The bonfire will follow coronation. It will also be held at the high school.

Thursday's activities include Jam the Gym for volleyball, Crowd the Courts for tennis and Flood the Fields for soccer games. Friday features the homecoming football game against the New Prague Trojans.

Homecoming comes to a close with the Homecoming dance Saturday.

There is one more change to this year's event, Miller said, but it's more of a behind-the-scenes kind of change. In past years, the FHS Youth Development students organized all of the Homecoming activities. That's different this year.

"We wanted to engage all of the high school organizations," FHS assistant principal Lowell Miller said. "Now we're using all of the student leaders in our building. They act as kind of a Homecoming super-committee."

The organizers now include students involved in the Tiger Leadership Club, National Honor Society, Peers for Peers, Youth Development and Link Crew, as well as representatives from the FHS band, Tiger athletes and cheerleaders. Each group is organizing different activities throughout the week, Miller said.
