When Farmington High School needed a director for the spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof, assistant principal Kerry Timmerman knew who to ask.

Timmerman went back to his own high school director, Mark Rud. A resident of Owatonna, Rud now drives up to Farmington for the play practices, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

"I directed 11 plays when I was teaching," Rud said, "and I had a positive experience with all of them. I thought I'd give it one more shot and I'm glad I did. They are a fantastic group of kids."

FHS student David Silber leads the production in the role of Tevye, the Jewish father of five daughters -- three of whom he is trying to marry off. Kay Feldt plays Golde, his strong-willed, sharp-tongued wife. The eldest daughter, Tzeitel (Emma Vietti) is in love with Motel (Jordan LaVictoire. However, Tevye promises her to Lazar Wolf, who is played by Jon Gasior.

The play goes on to unite the second daughter, Hodel (Ashlea Orth) to Perchik (Patrick Shea) who is invited into Tevye's home to tutor his daughters. The third daughter, Chava (Emily Olsson) eventually meets and falls in love with a Russian, Fyedka (Blake Bostrom). All of Tevye's daughters' reunions take them further away from Jewish marriage tradition -- which includes husbands being chosen for the women by Yente (Effie Barnes), the matchmaker.

"Fiddler on the Roof is just a great play," Rud said. "It takes place during the Russian revolution in a small Jewish village. It's a very colorful play. It's a lot of fun, with a lot of comic moments."

The orchestra is under the direction of FHS band director Jeff Gottwig. Choir teacher Megan Dimich has directed the vocal music for the production.

Fiddler on the Roof will be presented Thursday through Saturday at Boeckman Middle School. Performances begin at 7 p.m.
