A fitting conclusion
Farmington Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Another school-record time by the 4x800 relay was an appropriate ending to the 2008 season for the Farmington girls track team.

The foursome of juniors Jackie Beckett and Kaitlin Mincke, freshman Devyn Alberts and eighth grader Bailey Opsal combined on a blazing time of 9:29.27 in the 4x800-meter relay at last weekend Class AA State Championships. They finished fifth against a competitive field of nine teams, earning five of the nine points that placed them 36th out of 56 point-scoring teams. The showing capped a season where the Tigers set school records in all seven relays -- the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, short sprint medley, sprint medley and distance medley relay -- and nine school records in all.

"The state meet was a very exciting time for Farmington track. The ladies competed very well and we scored points to make us 36th this year," Farmington coach Tom Hart said. "The 4x800 raced with the best in the state and proved they belong there."

The Tigers finished fifth behind four teams that were anchored by senior runners. Eden Prairie, which featured two seniors, won the event in 9:16.50, just over four seconds ahead of runner-up Minnetonka. Eastview crossed the finish line third in 9:26.20 and Totino-Grace edged Farmington by just under a second with a 9:28.70 clocking.

Beckett, the 4x800 leadoff runner, accounted for the other four Farmington points with a sixth-place finish in the open 800. She earned the final spot in the nine-runner final with a preliminary time of 2:23.02, then moved up three spots with a 2:19.07 clocking in the finals. Eighth grader Haylie Zenner of Fergus Falls outlasted a trio of trailing seniors with a winning time of 2:15 flat. Four freshmen rounded out the final field of nine runners.
