Senior Darren Beenken emerged from a group of 80 competitors to win Monday afternoon's annual Ironman Competition on the first day of football practice at Farmington High School.


Beenken, who is entering his third season at the Tigers' starting quarterback, won two of the competition's seven events while accumulating 4,810 points. His clean lift of 255 lbs. and his 34 flips of a tractor tire across the Tiger Stadium turf were both team bests. Teammate Josh Boatwright tied Beenken for the team lead with 34 tire flips.

Beenken also back squatted 365 lbs. and benched 271 lbs. to post the best three-lift total in the competition at 891 lbs. He added a vertical leap of 32 ½ inches, an L-drill time of 7.5 seconds and a 40-yard dash of 4.92 seconds.

The other five events were won by five different competitors. Reid Taubenheim turned in the best vertical leap at 33 ½ inches and finished second in the overall race with a score of 4,541 points. Third-place finisher Alex Chadwick (4,365 points) and Mac Bassett shared the title in the L-drill with times of 7.1 seconds and fourth-place overall finisher Jack Erickson (4,339 points) won the 40 with a time of 4.64 seconds.

Seventh-place finisher Nick Raurk set the pace in the bench press with a lift of 278 lbs. and Jake LeClaire back squatted 375 pounds to lead the team.

Rounding out the top 10 were Mason Auge (fifth, 4,266 points), Mason Gaylord (sixth, 4,162 points), Raurk (4,119 points), Kevin Clifton (eighth, 3,995 points), Athen Ashton (ninth, 3,991 points) and Boatwright (10th, 3,951 points).

The Tigers have another full week of practice before they scrimmage at Lakeville North next Saturday. The regular season opens with a non-conference home game against Rochester Mayo Friday, Aug. 31 at Tiger Stadium.
