Girls tennis: Tigers close out 11-6 season
Farmington Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

The Farmington girls tennis team continued its winning ways in the final week of the regular season, taking three of four matches to finish with a record of 11-6.

The 11 win was the most for the program since the 2002 team went 12-7. Individually, Megan Stivers finished 9-9 to become the Tigers’ first No. 1 singles player since 2001 to finish with a .500 record, and in doubles play twin sisters Beth and Lindsey Fairchild earned the best doubles record in school history at 16-3.

“We had a great final week of the regular season. Suffice it to say we hit our stride and have been playing great tennis,” veteran coach Jack Olwell said.

The Tigers closed out the regular season last Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Shakopee at the Boeckman Middle School courts. The setback gave them a final record of 3-4 in the league.

The lone win came from the Fairchilds, who cruised 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Stivers was sidelined due to a bout with mononucleosis, and the Sabers swept all four singles matches against a shuffled Tiger lineup.

The Tigers begin Section 1AA team tournament play this week.

Farmington 4, Chaska 3

A sweep of singles play gave the Tigers a 4-3 win over Chaska last week in a match that was postponed for eight days due to rain.

With the score tied at 3-3, Jess Novotny resumed her No. 3 singles match and rallied 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to seal the victory. Stivers, Ryan Jara (12-7) and Callie Olmscheid (13-5) each won in straight sets.

Farmington 5, Holy Angels 2

Strong singles play helped the Tigers tally another close victory over Holy Angels last Tuesday at Valley View Park.

Jara came from behind 2-6, 6-0 and 10-7 at No. 2 singles to earn her 12th win. Stivers and Novotny each won in straight sets.

Doubles wins came from the Fairchilds at No. 1 doubles and Sam Gallagher and Hannah Toomey at No. 3 doubles.
