Government center will get a new roof
The rubber membrane roof of the administration center at the Dakota County Government Center in Hastings is going to be replaced.
At its regular meeting this week, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners awarded the bid for the project to Commercial Roofing Inc. Its base bid was $151,922. Five other companies submitted bids for the project.
The roof is now 18 years old and is the original roof for the building constructed in 1990.
The current roof warranty expired in 2000. A roof assessment completed in 2002 recommended the roof be inspected and repaired on an annual basis, with the possibility of extending the roof life for approximately five more years.
Annual roof inspections and necessary repairs were completed, extending the roof life through the 2007 season. A total of $17,426 was spent on repairs during the past five years to extend the roof's life. Earlier this year, the roof developed additional, unexpected leaks, and the facilities management division recommended the roof be replaced now due to its age, condition and the possibility for more leaks.
Facilities management worked with consultant on the bids. The existing roof insulation is in good condition and will be reused. More insulation will be added, resulting in increased energy conservation
The project is expected to be completed within 30 days.
There is $230,000 in the capital improvement program for the roof replacement project.
