Gymnastics: Ow! Tigers shine at Jacko-themed invite
Farmington's gymnastics team danced to "Bad" as part of what turned out to be a very good performance at Saturday's Michael Jackson-themed Farmington Invite.
The Tigers won the dance-off competition backed by the 1987 Jackson hit and topped the field at their own four-team meet with a score of 140.7, their second score over 140 this season. They also avenged an early-season loss to Austin, which finished second with a 135.85.
"The girls were well-rested and ready to perform," Farmington coach Lynn Bauman said.
The strong performance was aided by the fact that, for the first time this season, the Tigers didn't have to count any falls in their beam score. As a result they claimed four of the top five spots, led by Haley Luhman's first-place score of 9.05. Terra Klima followed in second with an 8.8, Jade Alm was fourth with an 8.7 and Amy Kiminski took fifth with a score of 8.5.
Luhman finished second in the all-around with a score of 35.55. She was also second in the vault with an 8.85, third in the bars with an 8.65 and third in the floor exercise at 9.0. Kiminski finished third in the all-around thanks to a fourth-place finish in the vault and fifth-place finishes in the bars and floor exercise.
Erin Hickey placed fourth in the bars and floor exercise en route to a fourth-place all-around score of 34.15.
Klima won the bars and Kathryn Beckett placed second in the floor exercise with matching scores of 9.35.
With Beckett out of the lineup, the Tigers turned in a 134.6-128.2 dual meet victory over Faribault last Tuesday.
Luhman was once again champion in the all-around thanks to a first-place floor exercise routine, a second-place showing in the bars and third-place finishes in the vault and beam. Hickey placed fifth in the all-around with a 33.05 after taking second in the floor, third in the bars and fourth in the vault.
Klima once again topped the competition in the bars with a 9.325.
"The girls did great at the meet. Bars looked really good," Bauman said.
The Tigers compete again tomorrow when rival Northfield comes to Boeckman Middle School for a 6:30 Missota Conference dual meet.
