Gymnastics: Tigers finish 5th in 1AA
Competing against the likes of No. 1-ranked Northfield and No. 6 Winona made advancing to the state tournament a tough task for the other gymnasts in Section 1AA.
Those two schools finished 1-2 and accounted for the majority of the state individual qualifiers Friday night at Rochester Century High School. Eleventh-ranked Owatonna finished third, host Century followed in fourth with its best score of the season and Farmington rounded out the top five with a score of 137.60 at the eight-team meet.
“Once again we are back in the hardest section of the state. The girls had a good meet. We would have liked to end on a higher note, but it was good,” Farmington coach Lynn Bauman said. “There were only two girls not from Northfield or Winona that made it to state individually.”
The Tigers did come away with a section title, however. They won the section team academic award thanks to a cumulative GPA of 3.995 and will be recognized at the state banquet tonight.
Farmington’s highest section finish went to Amanda Davenport, who placed ninth in the floor exercise with a score of 9.325. She also scored a 9.175 in the vault and an 8.3 in leading the Tigers in the uneven bars.
Gina Mercurio led the team in the balance beam and was one of three gymnasts to finish in a tie for 10th with a score of 8.85. Teammate Rachel Kiminksi added an 8.45.
Tahra Eckert led the Tigers in the vault with a score of 9.295. Kathryn Beckett (9.20) and Abby Schwartz (9.025) each broke 9.0 in the floor exercise.
