The Minnesota State Patrol accident report indicates the Eilen was traveling eastbound on Highway 50, just north of Birch Avenue in Hampton, when he lost control of his pickup truck, a 2006 GMC Sierra. The report shows the road was wet, and Eilen lost control while driving on the outside curve. The pickup slid into the ditch sideways, then rolled several times.

Eilen was ejected from the vehicle. Dakota County chief deputy sheriff Dave Bellows said it is unknown whether or not Eilen was wearing a seatbelt, and that the accident is still under investigation. Eilen was the only one in the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Dakota County coroner's investigator.

The accident was reported at 9:18 p.m. Nov. 23. Hampton and Randolph rescue personnel responded to the scene. The accident is being investigated by the Dakota County Sheriff's Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
