Have a hoot Saturday at Farmington Lutheran
Farmington Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Farmington Lutheran Church will welcome fall and any interested community members Saturday with an old-fashioned hootenanny.

The church's fourth annual Holy Hoot will start at 11 a.m. and wrap up with a 5 p.m. worship service. In between, there will be a medallion hunt, a car and bike show, a performance by the Gloryland Gospel Band and a variety show, among other things. There will also be food, and all of it is free for whoever wants to show up.

"There's all this stuff going on at one time," said Jill Hawkins, the church's marketing and communications coordinator. "It's just really fun."

Farmington Lutheran started holding the Holy Hoot in 2009 as a way to bring the community in and make good use of the scenic property the church has occupied since 2004.

"We thought we needed some kind of community outreach event to let people know we're here and see our gorgeous property," Hawkins said. "That's kind of where it all started, as a fun, fall, family event."

The hootenanny theme evolved during planning for the first event, and it set the direction for what takes place there each year. There will be checked tablecloths and hankies, apple bobbing and a chili dinner.

Attendance at the event depends a bit on the weather. Last year skies were clear and the hoot drew about 1,000 people. Two years ago, the weather didn't cooperate and attendance was down.

Fortunately, Hawkins said, this year's forecast calls for sunny skies.
