Homecoming football: Tigers host Northfield tonight
Last year's game against Northfield may have been the best of the season for the Farmington football team.
The Tigers fell 21-16 on the road against a Raiders team that went on to win eight games and finish second in the Missota Conference while piling up over 2,000 rushing yards.
The Northfield team the Tigers host in tonight's Homecoming game appears to be far less intimidating. The Raiders have lost two games in a row - one to a Chanhassen team Farmington defeated for its only victory - and they've already matched last season's total of three losses.
Northfield ran for 247 yards and five touchdowns in its lone conference victory in Week 3. The running game has produced an average of just 131 yards per game and three total touchdowns in its other four contests.
Farmington, meanwhile, has continued to live and die through the air. Junior quarterback Darren Beenken has completed 76 of 144 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns, but is coming off his two worst games of the season. Last week at Holy Angels he completed just 7 of 30 passes, and the week before he completed 14 of 27 passes, but was picked off four times against Shakopee.
In those last two losses, the Tiger defense has allowed a combined 789 rushing yards.
Senior tailback Athen Ashton leads the Tiger ground game with 400 yards on 90 carries.
The Farmington Homecoming game gets underway at 7 p.m. tonight at Tiger Stadium.
