According to the criminal complaint, deputies were dispatched to the jail on the report of criminal damage to property. The Hastings Fire Department was dispatched to the jail in order to turn off the fire alarm and the sprinkler system. The department's cost was more than $1,100. Dakota County Facilities Management was called to replace the sprinkler head.

Initially, Young said he threw his shoe at the sprinkler because he was angry with the jail staff. He later said he was standing on a chair in his cell fooling with the sprinkler head and a part popped off causing it to spray large amounts of water.
