Kenneth A. Gerten, 82
Kenneth A. Gerten, age 82, of Farmington, died peacefully surrounded by his family on April 22, 2009.
Kenneth Anthony Gerten was born Aug. 3, 1926 to Henry and Angela (nee Jansen) Gerten in South St. Paul. He attended St. Augustine grade school and graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1944. After high school he enlisted in the Army and honorably fought for his country in WWII.
Through the GI Bill he was accepted to the University of Minnesota and finished his college education, graduating from St. Thomas College with a bachelor of arts in accounting.
Ken was married on July 1, 1950 to Joan Sauber at St. Michael's church in Farmington. For 33 years he partnered with his brother, Dick, as owner of Farmington Floral. Ken was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as grand knight and financial secretary and longtime parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was very involved in Farmington city government, working on the city council and planning commission and as city clerk.
Ken loved the game of baseball, including playing for the Meisville Mudhens. Fishing and spending time at his cabin in Wisconsin, playing horseshoes and bowling were among his favorite things to do. But most importantly, he loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Ken was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Krech; and brothers Raymond and Leonard.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan (nee Sauber); children: Ed (Karen), Therese (Rick) McBride, Anne Lamberty, Rita Lensing, Bernadette Gerten (Mark Severson), Fran (Greg) Iverson, and Chris (Bryan) Zweier; 12 beloved grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother, Richard Gerten; also by other loving relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 27, 2009 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Farmington. Visitation was on Sunday at White Funeral Home, Farmington and one hour prior to the service at church.
Interment was at St. Michael's Cemetery, Farmington.
