The Farmington Legion baseball team found out the hard way Friday night the risk that comes with bringing nine players to a game.

With a couple players on vacation and one playing in a different tournament, Post 189 made the trip to Chaska for a doubleheader with the bare minimum number of players. They made it to the fifth inning of a 1-1 game before a bad-hop ground ball hit first baseman Nick Schoening in the mouth and knocked him out of the game.

Schoening wound up in the hospital and Post 189 ended up having to forfeit Game 1 and reschedule Game 2 for later in the season.

Pitcher JD Hinks provided 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball in the abbreviated contest.

Ryan Giebel doubled and scored Farmington’s lone run on a sacrifice fly by Landon Neilson in the fourth. Giebel had two of the team’s five hits. Schoening, Neilson and Parker Holmstrom each added base hits.

Post 189 (3-7) is back in action at 5 p.m. Sunday at home against New Prague.
