Legion baseball: Post 189 opens with sweep of Lonsdale
The season couldn't have gotten off to a much better start for Farmington's Post 189 baseball team last Thursday in Lonsdale.
Post 189 pounded out 19 hits and got two solid pitching efforts from Justin Tang and Cody Carlson in a 10-0, 6-4 season-opening sweep.
"To sum up both games, power was on display. Everyone picked up where they left off in school ball," Farmington coach Andy Pierskalla said. "Everybody made solid contact, even the singles were line drive, hard hits. The kids were ready to go right away."
Farmington scored in four of six innings in the opener, starting with a two-run first inning. Taylor Wood started the inning with a single and came around to score the first run on a Steven Barber triple. Danny Tutewohl followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The score stayed 2-0 until the fourth inning. Sebren Baer started the fourth with a double and he moved to third on a bunt single by Quinn Eden. Matt Molitor followed with a two-run double and Wood added an RBI groundout to make it 5-0.
Tutewohl accounted for most of the offense after that, belting a two-run home run over the right field wall in the fifth and ripping a two-run single in the fifth.
The offense provided plenty of support for Tang, who held Lonsdale to two hits while walking none over six innings. He struck out one and was backed by errorless defense.
Post 189 trailed 3-0 through two innings in the second game of the doubleheader, but rallied for two runs in the third and three more in the fifth to take the lead.
Barber started the scoring with an RBI double in the second and Tang added a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game.
Molitor got Post 189 back within a run in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to right field. Wood followed with a double and RBI singles by Barber and Tang made it 5-4.
Carlson allowed four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over the first five innings. He came back out to the mound for the top of the sixth and worked a scoreless frame to preserve the lead, then back-to-back doubles by Molitor and Zach Wallace in the bottom of the inning manufactured an insurance run.
Tutewohl struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.
Post 189 plays again Saturday at the Lakeville South Wood Bat Tournament.
