The Minneapolis-Duluth/Superior Passenger Rail Alliance received half of the money it had requested of the state Legislature to help pay for a study of the line.

A bill containing $900,000 for the study made it past the governor's veto pen, but another that would appropriate $1 million more wasn't as lucky.

The alliance already has raised $200,000 for the $2.1 million study, said Bob Manzoline, director of the St. Louis and Lake Counties Regional Rail Authority. It is now pursuing federal grants from the Department of Transportation and the Federal Rail Administration to make up the difference, but won't know until September and March if it is successful in landing them.

Manzoline said alliance members don't know if they can wait that long. "We're trying to get it done this summer," he said.
