Shannon Herrera knows how therapeutic a good run can be. She credits running with helping her stay sane after her fourth child was born eight years ago, and these days she runs eight miles every day.

Now, she wants to help other women discover running's benefits for themselves.

On April 24, Herrera will launch a local chapter of Moms on the Run, a Minnesota-based fitness business that has spread nationwide in recent years. Twice a week, Herrera and two volunteer coaches will meet group members at Rambling River Park and lead them through a running workout and other exercises.

The business seems like a perfect fit for Herrera. After 10 years as a stay-at-home mom, the former preschool teacher was looking for a way to get back into the workforce. She didn't want to go back to the classroom, so she signed up for the personal trainer program at Dakota County Technical College. She received her certification over the summer. She prefers cardiovascular training to weights, though, so when a friend mentioned Moms on the Run, she checked it out.

"Once I looked into it, I bought (the franchise)the next month because it's such a fabulous fit," Herrera said.

Herrera officially made the purchase in December. Now she's in the process of recruiting members.

Moms on the Run is aimed at beginner and intermediate runners. After meeting at Rambling River Park the groups will run up the paved trail along Akin Road. There will be separate workouts for the two groups, but they will start at the same time and turn around at the same time. Both groups should arrive together back at the park.

"Everything is based on your own pace," Herrera said.

Herrera likes the idea of getting a group together to exercise, and she likes the idea that it is targeted specifically toward a single community.

"The fitness is kind of the draw, but the friendships and the fun that you're going to have doing it is what's going to motivate you the most," Herrera said. "To me, that is such a draw. The accountability factor of seeing people in the grocery store ... that you know and you're going to recognize. It kind of beats going to Lifetime where people are from everywhere."

Herrera already has seven people signed up for her first session, which runs 18 weeks from April 24 through Aug. 20. She expects to see more interest once the snow stops flying.

Members can sign up to run either once or twice per week. The group will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Herrera is excited to get started, and to see the progress group members make over the course of the spring and summer.

"I am looking forward to getting outside," she said. "I'm looking forward to motivating people. The best part is seeing people thinking they can't run at all to running for three or four minutes. It's such a great feeling."
