New forum will introduce students to military service options
High school students always have lots of options when it comes to post-secondary education. Ad sometimes, there's options within options to think about, too.
Take for example, the idea of going into "the military." With five branches to choose from, plus things like ROTC or reserve programs available, "the military" can be a pretty broad set of options. And that's why Farmington High School is offering a new military forum for students next week.
The first of its kind, the military forum will bring together recruiters from the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and the National Guard for a two-hour, after school presentation. Each recruiter will have 15 minutes to do a presentation, then they'll all stick around for a question and answer session.
One of the recruiters had asked to be included in this week's college fair, said FHS career center coordinator Amy Olson. Thing was, the college fair was being planned specifically for students who wanted information on colleges. The military field, though, is something much different, so Olson thought that maybe a college fair wasn't the right place for a recruiter.
But there's no denying that students have interest in the military. Last week, a Marine recruiter came to the school. About 35 to 40 students said they were interested, and several have already enlisted.
Olson came up with the idea of a military forum -- something much like the college fair, only designed as a presentation for each of the branches -- so that those students and their families could hear a little more about the options there are in the armed services.
"I think it will be very informative. It will open the eyes of the students for what's out there. That's the main goal," she said. "I have never heard of anything like this before, and a lot of the recruiters said they've never done anything like this before, either. We're going to give it a try and see if it's successful."
No reservations are necessary -- it's just an open forum from 3:15-5:15 p.m., on Wednesday, May 5, in the large lecture hall at FHS. Olson plans to have tables set up, too, so the recruiters can put up displays.
Parents are welcome, and encouraged, to attend, as well.
"Hopefully, some of these kids will bring their parents out to meet the recruiters," Olson said. "They can come out and learn what the students are going to be getting into in the future. We would love to have the parent involvement in this, too."
There is no charge for the military forum. For more information, contact Olson at 651-252-2852.
