One injured in Sunday snowmobile accident

Email

Snowmobiling accidents aren't common in Farmington. According to police chief Brian Lindquist, over the past few years, the police department has generally only had to respond to one each year.

If that trend continues this winter, Farmington has had its one snowmobile accident for the year. That accident occurred late Sunday afternoon on the west side of the city.

Farmington police were summoned to a one-vehicle snowmobile accident just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of 190th Street West and Everest Trail. Officer Andrew Van Dorn spotted the scene, about 1,000 feet from the squad.

Crossing the snow to get to the victim, Van Dorn and officer Matt Hendrickson found that 24-year-old Michael Allen Doran of Webster had been thrown from his snowmobile.

Doran told police that he had hit a berm while snowmobiling with friends, and rolled his sled. Doran also told officers he could not feel his legs. According to Van Dorn, Doran was conscious and responsive, but the nature of his injury required a request for air evacuation. He was alone on the snowmobile. There were no other victims involved.

He was transported via helicopter to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Lindquist said this is the first snowmobile accident with injuries of this winter. Usually, he said, officers respond to about "one a year," but none he could think of have resulted in fatalities.

Doran was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, Lindquist said.

Lindquist urges all snowmobilers to take safety precautions when they get on their sleds.

"Watch your speeds, know where you are, wear a helmet and be safe," he said. "You have to know where you're snowmobiling, and if you don't, you should proceed with a little caution."
