Farmington Dew Days

The Farmington Sons of the American Legion will hold an omelet breakfast fundraiser for Dew Days this Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at Tailgaters. All proceeds will go to the 2013 celebration. Please join us!


Attention all arts and craft vendors: We have started to take applications for Arts and Craft vendors for the 2013 Dew Days celebration. There is a flat rate of $75 for a 10X10 space. No deposit required. No requirement of hours to full fill. Vendors will start setting up on Friday, June 14, around 10 a.m. Everything will open by noon that day and run until 8 p.m. Hours for June 15 are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vendors are responsible for their own tables and tents. Checks can be mailed to Dallas Hodgkins at 1308 Walnut St., Farmington, Minn., 55024. Checks must be made out to C.E.E.F.

Trinity Care Center

The Trinity Care Center is hosting a bake sale Feb. 13-15, located in the front lobby. It will be titled "Sweet on the Suites" in honor of our new Memory Care facility. Please let Joy know if you would like to bake for the sale at 651-460-1166. Thank you!

Farmington VFW

Congratulations to Rebecca Opp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Opp of Farmington. Rebecca was our winner in Farmington for the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7662. Her essay was entered in the Second District contest. A District Meeting was held in South St. Paul, on Jan. 5. The winners of the Patriots Pen Contest and the Voice of Democracy contest were announced. The winners in each contest gave their speeches. Rebecca's essay has been entered in the Department judging, and will be announced on Jan. 26 at the banquet, for the VFW's Mid-Winter Meeting, in Minneapolis. Local Post Commander Ron Ersfeld and his wife Bev have been asked to escort Rebecca to the banquet table, where the nine District winners will be seated.

Rambling River Center will be hosting a Steak Fry Dinner on Jan. 19, from 5-8 p.m. Join them for this steak fry, to help raise funds. VFW Club is located at 421 3rd Street in Farmington.

There's still time for any veteran to order a paver for the veterans memorial. The order will be placed by the end of January. Let Leon Orr know if you are interested in getting a paver, 651-334-7574.

Yellow Ribbon Network

Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network continues through May to hold free Veteran Dinners the first Monday of every month at 6PM. All Veterans are invited to attend. The next dinner will be hosted by Lord of Life Lutheran on Feb. 4.

Mark your calendars for some additional upcoming events: Feb. 2 will be our annual Steak Fry Fundraiser at the VFW. We are starting planning for our annual Military Mother/Grandmother Luncheon on May 11 at St Michaels Church. If you know of a mother or grandmother of currently serving service members, please let us know and we will get an invitation to them. Contact 651-460-2248 for more information.

Dakota County Library in Farmington

Dakota County Library's Minnesota Mosaic Winter/Spring series explores the creative and resourceful spirit of people from across Minnesota. The series kickoffs at the Farmington Library on Jan. 12, at 1p.m., with "Of Dolls and Murder," an award-winning documentary by Minneapolis-based filmmaker and author Susan Marks. Before forensics, DNA, and CSI we had dollhouses - an unimaginable collection of miniature crime scenes, known as the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. Created in the 1930s and 1940s by a crime-fighting grandmother, Frances Glessner Lee created the Nutshells to help homicide detectives. John Waters narrates the tiny world of big time murder.

The Farmington Library and Farmington Park and Recreation Department is partnering to offer a monthly Storytime in the Park. For ages 0-6, these winter/spring storytimes will be held the third Wednesday of the month, beginning on Jan. 16, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Join us for stories, games and crafts at the inviting indoor park-like setting of The Cottages at Trinity Care Center, 3410 213th Street West, in Farmington.

Parents, grandparents, childcare providers and preschool teachers are invited to an Every Child Ready to Read Workshop on Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn research-based practices that can help develop language and pre-reading skills in children from birth to age 5. Continuing Education hours available. Registration is required.

On Feb. 4, from 6-8 p.m,, Twin Cities Media Alliance will host a session, Promote Your Business with Facebook. Learn how to set up a business Facebook page, distribute consistent information, grow your fan base and set up editorial calendars. Your own laptop is suggested but not required. Registration is required.

Meet Minnesota author, Barbara Deese, on Feb. 5, 12:30-1:30pm, as she discusses her book, Murder at Spirit Falls, the first in a series featuring members of the No Ordinary Women Book Club.

Farmington Lions Club

The Farmington Lions Club has a dinner meeting the second Tuesday of the month at Gossips and a board meeting the third Tuesday of the month at Gossips.

The annual 5M6 Mid Winter Convention took place at the Airport Marriott in Bloomington January 4 - 6. Forty two Lion and Lioness Clubs from our district were represented. Seminars are held about the different Lion activities. We support the University of Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Can Do Canines, the Special Olympics, Camp Courage, Camp Confidence, Camp Needlepoint, Salvation Army bellringing and the Diabetes Association.

This is just a small example of Lions activities. Each club holds fundraisers to provide donations for these organizations. Lions International Director Bob Corlew attended and challenged us to get up each morning and say to yourself, what good can I do today!

Farmington American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189

All Farmington American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189 members are invited to the next meeting, 7 p.m., Jan. 21, to participate in the installation ceremony for President-elect Kim Lomas. A potluck dinner will be held, as well. Please bring a dish to pass if you are attending. The meeting will be held at the Farmington VFW.

Also, we are just over our half-way goal in membership. If you have not yet paid your dues for 2012-13, please do so. You may drop your membership off at the pulltabs window at Tailgaters.
