Reading program kicks off in June

Kids and teens can make a splash and make waves at their Dakota County Library this summer.

Reading, prizes, and almost 300 free programs and special events await summer readers at their Dakota County Library this summer from June 14 through Aug. 14.

Beginning June 14, kids age 12 and younger can sign up for the Make A Splash: Read Summer Reading Program at any Dakota County library or the Bookmobile. Kids who sign up will be given a form to keep track of the time they read or are read to. The library awards prizes to participants after five, 10 and 20 hours of reading. Kids can join in an art contest, enjoy storytimes, meet famous authors, do art projects or play games.

They're also invited to enjoy the metro-wide summer reading program kickoff, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 17 at the Como Park Zoo. The event is free and no registration is required.

Teens -- ages 12 to 18 -- can pick up a Make Waves summer reading packet at any Dakota County Library beginning June 14. Teens who sign up can write short book reviews to be entered into weekly prize drawings and will receive two tickets to a kick-off event, at June 24 at Cascade Bay Waterpark. Special programs offered throughout the summer for teens including crafts, writing, dance, Dungeons & Dragons, book discussion groups, video and board games. Participating teens are invited to an end of the summer Teen Library Takeover Aug. 13.
