Ronald E. Miller, 77
Ronald "Ron" E. Miller, age 77, of Ellsworth, Wis., died Tuesday, June 18, at the Pepin Manor, Pepin, Wis.
Ron was born on March 18, 1936, in St. Paul, Minn., the son of Ernest and Frances (Gorshe) Miller. He was a graduate of Hortonville High School where he was a star athlete, excelling in track and football. Ron served his country in the Army as an MP, turning that law enforcement experience into a lifelong career. He served as police chief in Spring Valley, chief deputy for the Pierce County Sheriff's Dept., and finished his career as police chief in Ellsworth, retiring after 25 years of service in 2001. All together he was active for 43 years in law enforcement.
Along the way he met Roma Jean Williams of Tennessee. They were united in marriage on Dec. 7, 1957. To this union four children were born: Debra, Steve, Ed, and Troy. In addition to his law enforcement career, Ron and Jean owned and operated the Little Grand Café and Millers Café from 1972 until 1978. He was instrumental in founding the Ellsworth Ambulance Service and Civil Defense. He served as deputy coroner for Pierce County for many years under Dr. Klaas then Doc Jonas. Ron may have been blustery on the outside, but underneath it all, he was truly a good-hearted, kind, and gentle soul.
During his retirement he loved spending time boating and camping on the Mississippi. He also loved kids, working as a teacher's aide and driving for the Ellsworth Schools.
Ron is survived by his wife, Roma Jean Miller, Ellsworth; four children: Debra (Greg) Birkel, Ellsworth; Steve (Lori) Miller, Hudson, Wis.; Ed Miller, Red Wing, Minn.; and Tory (Stacy Radcliff) Prescott, Wis.; six grandchildren, Shawn (April) Miller, Billie Jo (Nehemiah) Huppert, Bailee Huber, Megan Miller, Jada Miller, and Olivia Miller; four great-grandchildren, Carter Huppert, Luke Miller, Samuel Miller, Lily Huppert, and Tori Grace Miller.
