Schindler is crowned pig kisser
Being well known in Farmington comes with being in business in Farmington. And sometimes, kissing a pig comes with being well known in Farmington.
Just ask Phylicia Schindler, manager of Pizza Man in downtown Farmington. She's worked there for about eight years, and this year, she was asked to be a contestant in the esteemed Kiss the Pig contest, a fundraiser for the Rambling River Center. The contest raised $1,131.15 for the center.
Schindler was crowned winner of the 2013 Kiss the Pig contest Saturday night during Dew Days. On Tuesday, we visited with her for a few minutes, to talk about her experience.
You got to kiss the pig. How'd that go for you?
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The lady just told me to bend down on one knee, give him a treat and kiss him, so that's all I did.
How'd you get talked into being a contestant?
(Rambling River Center coordinator) Missie Kohlbeck called and asked me to do it. At first I really wasn't too interested in doing it, but then I knew it was going for a good cause so I said yes.
I saw the collection cans were sitting on the counter at Pizza Man. What did you think when you would see people putting money into yours?
At first I didn't think that I was going to win. I just thought that we're here, so of course mine was going to get the most (donations). But then whoever comes and picks up the cans collecting the change came with mine, the envelope was just busting open, so it was like, oh boy.
Did you suspect you would be crowned as the 2013 pig kisser?
I had a feeling. It was between me and one other person. I was still surprised to be.
When Miss Farmington came along and she put the crown on top of your head, what did you think?
I don't know. It wasn't so bad. I thought it was going to be ... I was more afraid of having stage fright than to have to kiss the pig itself. But I do think it was a very ugly pig. I thought it was going to be a cute pig, a little pig.
You were pretty fast kissing that pig. Was it just kind of a case of, get in and get it over with?
Yeah, I didn't want to kiss it for any longer than I had to. I guess it's hard to tell, because I didn't think it was that fast.
Now you'll come back next year as the reigning pig kisser. Any thoughts about that?
It will be interesting to see who the other candidates are. I'd have to see who the other candidates are before I'd set any expectations.
All things considered, are you glad that you participated in Kiss the Pig?
Yes. It went for a good cause and the pig was very friendly.
