Farmington School Board members are giving themselves a little extra time to talk things over.

Board members gave support Monday to a plan to transform one of their monthly meetings from a business meeting to a work session. The change will give board members a chance to discuss items without necessarily making a decision about them.

"We can start to have some of the deeper conversations on all of the new things we're doing in the district," board chair Tera Lee said Monday.

The board has used the work session format before. Current board member Julie McKnight was on the board then, and she said the change in structure might be useful at a time when the board is considering a lot of changes under new superintendent Jay Haugen.

"There comes a time when you get to a point where you need more working sessions," McKnight said. "It's kind of like an ebb and flow. There are times when you need to do that."

Board members hope the work session will make for shorter business meetings. Monday's meeting lasted nearly three hours. Under the new format, the business meetings would be primarily for voting on items previously discussed at work sessions.

As discussed Monday the work sessions would start at 6 p.m., half an hour earlier than regular board meetings.

Lee plans to bring a revised meeting schedule to the next regular board meeting Jan. 23.
