Does the quality of the storm water runoff affect you?
Lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands are among the most important natural resources within the City of Farmington and the City has an interest in ensuring their quality for future generations. But when rain falls on impervious surfaces such as paved streets, parking lots and rooftops, it can collect materials that pollute our water resources.
To address these and other water quality issues, a 1987 amendment to the federal Clean Water Act required implementation of a two-phase national program. As part of this program, Farmington, along with many other communities in Minnesota, was required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). The permit addresses many areas, specifically outlining controls and practices the city will implement in an effort to reduce or eliminate pollutants from storm water runoff.
The NPDES permit program requires regulated cities to hold a public hearing in conjunction with the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) annual report. This meeting allows citizens an opportunity to review the citys SWPPP and give written or oral input regarding the program.
Residents are encouraged to attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 7:00pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall located at 430 Third Street if you want to learn and/or make comments on what the City of Farmington is doing to comply with the NPDES Permit to keep our water clean.
