The city of Farmington has closed the warming houses at its outdoor ice rinks, but will continue to maintain the ice for a few more days. Or weeks, the way this winter seems to be going.

Typically, the city tries to keep ice rinks open through mid-February. This year, the last day for the warming houses was Feb. 17. But the snow and cold are still around, so Farmington parks and recreation director Randy Distad is keeping the rinks open a few more days.

The rinks were still under snow earlier this week, but that’s because the parks department’s primary focus is to first clear the trails after a snowfall. Once the trail system is cleared, staff will dig out the rinks.

“That will include removing the snow and having to do some work on the ice itself,” Distad said. “We will probably have to do some grooming and shaving, and then we will come back and try to flood them again.”

Rinks should be skate-ready before this weekend. With cold temperatures expected well into the first week of March, Distad expects the rinks will stay open for as long.

But it’s hard to say how much longer the ice will be available for sure.

“After that, it all depends on how long the weather cooperates,” Distad said.
