Swimming and diving: Farmington's Kirchmann wins 100 free
Farmington's Christopher Kirchmann shined against some tough competition Saturday at the Maroon and Gold Invitational.
The senior won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.26 seconds, placed second in the 50 freestyle in 22.68 and anchored two top-eight relays for the Tigers, who finished eighth out of 11 teams with 257 points. Lakeville South outscored Wayzata 522 ½-492 for the team title.
"It is always fun to swim with similar and faster teams. This meet is a good picture of how many teams in the state of Minnesota are doing," Farmington coach Ryan Hamen said. "Kirchmann had good placement in his 50 and 100 freestyle, but did not come out with the times he hoped for."
Kirchmann opened the meet by joining Oliver Chow, Nick Stephan and Brandon Dion for an eighth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. He also teamed up with Eric Schimmel, Evan Carufel and Dahlton Bell for a fifth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.
Carufel added a sixth-place individual finish in the 1-meter dive where he scored 168.95 points.
Bell was ninth in the 50 freestyle and joined Schimmel, Christian Bell and Dan Berg for a 10th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Tigers are back home tonight against Red Wing.
