Swimming and diving: Tigers 10th at True Team state
Farmington Minnesota P.O. Box 192 / 312 Oak St. 55024

Farmington swimming and diving coach Ryan Hamen knows there's no shame in finishing last when competing against the 12 best teams in the state.

The Tigers have done it the last two seasons, placing 12th at the True Team state meet after winning the Section 1AA title in convincing fashion.

Still, the Tigers were pleased not to finish at the bottom of the standings at Saturday's meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. Led by a pair of high finishes by senior Christopher Kirchmann, the Tigers placed 10th with 1,092 points. Eden Prairie edged Minnetonka for the championship, but more important to the Tigers, St. Michael-Albertville placed 11th with 1,041 points and Bloomington Jefferson came in 12th with 657 ½.

"It may sound negative, but it was our first year not being last. This was our goal and we had fun with it. Going against the best teams in the state is an honor to be a part of," Hamen said.

Kirchmann had a hand in three of the team's four top-10 finishes. He tied for third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.53 seconds, placed sixth in the 50 freestyle with a 22.44 clocking and joined Dahlton Bell, Christian Bell and Cameron Molnar for a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Molnar swam a 22.75 split before Kirchmann brought the Tigers in with a 21.50.

"Kirchmann showed he is a real contender for possible good placement at the state meet," Hamen said. "We have a good chance to contend in all relays."

The Tigers also got a 10th-place finish in the 1-meter dive where Evan Carufel scored 316.55 points.

The 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays each finished in 14th place. Oliver Chow, Spencer Kabran, Christian Bell and Eric Schimmel comprised the 200 medley unit and Schimmel, Dahlton Bell, Dan Berg and Kirchmann swam on the 400 freestyle team.

Dahlton Bell added a 15th-place individual swim in the 50 freestyle.
